The Plaza de Toros of Cieza is one of the most emblematic bullrings in the Region of Murcia. With more than a century and a half of history, it hosts each summer a bullfighting fair that blends tradition, devotion and popular festivity.
The bullfighting essence of Cieza
Cieza, located in the heart of the Vega Alta del Segura, is well known for its fertile fields and the breathtaking natural spectacle of its spring blossom. But it also boasts one of the oldest bullrings in the region, inaugurated in 1868 and since then a cultural landmark of the city.
Built in stone and designed in a classic style, the arena has witnessed countless glorious afternoons, memorable performances, and generations of aficionados who have passed on their passion for bullfighting. Over the years, it has undergone several refurbishments, always keeping its unique character: a cosy, intimate bullring with an unmistakable atmosphere.
The most important bullfighting cycles
The highlight of the season in Cieza is its August Fair, held as part of the patron saint festivities in honour of San Bartolomé. During these days, the bullring becomes the heart of the celebration, with bullfights, novilladas with picadors, and popular spectacles that draw both locals and visitors from across the region.
In recent years, the fair has also featured charity festivals and the release of young bulls, together with parallel activities designed to bring bullfighting closer to younger generations. The calendar is mainly concentrated in the second half of August, when the city comes alive with music, peñas (local clubs), parades and a vibrant festive spirit.
The management of Cieza’s bullfighting festivities has traditionally been linked to entrepreneurs from the Region of Murcia. Currently, the programme is usually organised in collaboration with the Cieza Town Council, aiming to present attractive line-ups that combine well-established figures with Murcian matadors who enjoy strong local support.
Notable matadors and anecdotes
Over the years, Cieza’s arena has welcomed some of the greatest names in bullfighting: Manolete, El Cordobés, Paco Camino, Enrique Ponce and Pepín Liria, the latter being particularly admired in the region.
One of the most talked-about anecdotes recalls the packed crowds of the 1960s and 70s, when the leading stars of the time drew such demand that tickets sold out days in advance. More recently, the bullring has also served as a showcase for young talents from the Murcia Bullfighting School, giving them an invaluable opportunity to step into the spotlight.
Traditions of the fair
The Cieza fair is about much more than bullfighting. Peñas bring the streets to life with brass bands, while gastronomic contests celebrate local cuisine, with the famous olla ciezana and other dishes from the fertile countryside taking centre stage. Colourful parades of floats, fireworks, lively open-air dances and the warm hospitality of the locals make these days a true festival of tradition and community.
